You will need to take pain medication after surgery. We recommend the following options in the order listed:
These medications are safe to take together. Anti-inflammatories should be taken with caution as they can cause stomach ulcers and kidney impairment, but are often safe and effective. Opioids like tramadol and morphine should be discontinued as soon as possible. Using an ice pack helps to reduce local swelling and pain, and often reduces the amount of medication required.
Early engagement with Physiotherapy is critical for the outcome of your operation. In most cases you should have a post operative Physio appointment organised before you undergo surgery. Tom is happy to help connect you with a Physiotherapist, and communicate directly with your Physio to discuss the specifics of your condition and surgery to facilitate safe rehabilitation and early return of function.
We will see you in our clinic for follow up. If you prefer to have a phone call that is usually an option. You may wish to make arrangements for wound care closer to your home. We appreciate a lot of our patients travel significant distance to come to our clinic and we are happy to make this easier when appropriate. Its best to let us know at the time of booking your surgery if you would prefer follow up by phone.
Keep your dressings on until the post op check. If you are worried about fluid or blood leaking from the wound please contact us. While some swelling and bruising is to be expected if you are concerned please get in touch.
